THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR WHEN ATTENDING A POETRY OR SPOKEN WORD VENUE
-
Be careful of any open mic or poetry event where the host performs more than all of the poets on the list combined.
-
Be careful of those poetry events seeking to exploit the heart, the vibe, the art that our ancestors have dedicated our lives to.
-
Be weary of hosts and hostess who make the event about them or their clique and do not make you feel like you are appreciated.
-
And most of all... before you attend any event please feel free to call for honest feedback.
PROVIDING QUALITY PERFORMANCES = OPEN MINDS & OPEN HEARTS
See you guys soon...... and thanks for your continued support!
And remember LIFE is too short for drama and petty things, so laugh hard, love truly and forgive quickly. Live While You Are Alive.
With heart and soul...
Goals For The DFW Spoken Word Scene
1. To have all participants in DFW Poetry Scene interface with professional artists and performers.
2. To provide opportunities for participants to engage in writing workshops that
allow for greater understanding of themselves and how their writing inspires others.
3. To create a community of artists, both young and old, novice and professional
inorder to establish a more enriched spoken word and creative writing culture.
4. To bridge the gap between the Main Stream Arts community and the Underground Spoken Word Movement
5. To do away with any and all egotistical, arrogant and selfish behaviors that lead to cliques and elitist attititudes.
MOTIVATION- DETERMINATION- EXCELLENCE No poetry entiry has given away more money, grew more poets, represented the Metroplex at the national level more times than The Fort Worth Naitonal Poetry Slam Team. So if you want to be entertained, inspired, or comforted via high quality spoken word performance poetry then scroll down and see where the hottest open mics in the Metroplex and beyond are located. And remember if it isn't a Mike Guinn Poetry Event. Then you go at your own risk. So come get your soul fed!

FORT WORTH POETRY SLAM Scoring methods
For preliminary rounds poets choose their order randomly for the first rotation of each bout. The second rotation is based on the scores from the first rotation with the top score going first in the second rotation and the lowest score going last.
The first and second round rotations will consist of a 3 minute poem Thus each contestant will have a total of 2 score. All points and ranks are added together for a total rank and total score. The top 5 poets with the highest cumulative scores will make up the Fort Worth National Poetry Slam
The poets will draw randomly in each round.
The top cumualtive score determines the champion. Money and trophies will be awarded to the top 2 poets overall.

| THE BIGGEST POETRY SLAM IN THE WORLD |
|
|
The Arkansas Grand Poetry Slams is Destined To Be The Worlds Most Prestigious Spoken Word Performance Poetry Competition For Individual Poets
The very first Arkansas Grand Slam was held in November of 1997. Hosted by the Poets Loft and then Loft Keeper Bud Kenney.
Over the years The Poets Loft has been passed on to various "keepers of the Loft" and the traditions have continued.
In June of 2004 Pamela Rawls and Mary Gray took on the task of Loft keepers continuing the path of direction expanding the network and bringing the Loft into main stream performance venue scenes.
Today the Poets loft is one of the most popular and respected venues in the country. It holds the worlds oldest continuous Open Mic Poetry reading in history, boasting 18 consecutive years never once missing a Wednesday night!
There is no other poetry competition on this earth that does more to celebrate the poet than this one.
Not PSI, Not LEAF, Not Blue Bonnet or Akoben Word Fest. NONE!
Come on out and be a part of the tradition, experience the Phenom of Slam Poetry live. Most importantly, experience The Loft!.
2008 Arkansas Grand Slam - November 7th & 8th
REGISTRATION OPENS JANUARY 1st 2008!!
http://thepoetsloft.com/
Pam and Mary did it again. They put on an amazing event proving once again that it is about the art of poetic expression and not the art of taking poets's money.
Pam and Mary's 10th Anniversary Poetry Grand Slam showed just how big their hearts are. They gave each poet $100.00 cash and a $50.00 Meal Voucher. Everyone was a winner. The workshops by NAM and Poets In The Streets were informative and everyone benefitted.
There is no other poetry competition on this earth that does more to celebrate the poet than this one. Not PSI, Not LEAF, Not Blue Bonnet or Akoben Word Fest. NONE! The Arkansas Poetry Grand Slam is an shining example of what a Poetry Slam should be. Which is an event that gives back to those who share their heart and soul. No matter how much ego, arrogance, pride, narcissim a poet may have had when they entered the event. They left it with a heightened sense of committment to the art and a renewed vigor for celebrating the art of Performance Poetry. Pam and Mary we salute you! WE LOVE YOU!

FORT WORTH SLAMS IS NOT THE HOTTEST POETRY PROMOTER IN THE STATE. NOT because we host one venue once a month to a 200 plus audience! NOT because we book national, international, poets and singers. Its because we tirelessly coordinate, promote and host multiple events each and every week all over the country..
1000s of fans/artists/sponosrs come out weekly to support our quality shows, events, activities, programs and its all because of the workshops, the features, the social work we do each time we perform.
Its not about hype, or popularity. Its about the soul of the poets and the spirit of the audience whom we truly love. Texas... we encourage you to visit as many venues as possbile (local-state-nationwide).
Please remeber that there is no other DFW poetry or spoken word show promotes the WHOLE Poetry scene like Mike Guinn and the Fort Worth Slams
Come see why Fort Worth Poetry Slams are the most duplicated -the most dedicated-the most committed poetry promoters in the country. PERIOD!

In The Sound Of Shadows
Until
our soul's shadow
merge as one
and succumbs to drums
too bold and beautiful.
Until
we be as we be
softly syncopated movements
bowing to sounds yet made
watching moonlight become nightshade
in the dawn of morning’s foreplay.
Until
passion's ripe rebellion becomes a stallion
colliding inside us... and light
leaps from revelations to reflection
like unsung songs..
whispered by foolish trade-winds
refusing sun-sage in satin sky.
Until
its time to make our own sounds
unveil our own moist moments beneath dew drops
buried beneath the rustle of autumn’s clover
We will ..remain .. as poetry is..
a beautifully ancient echo
sitting in the sound of shadows.
