Biography Michael Guinn is a native Texan who holds a Masters Degree in social work. What he witnessed as a caseworker for Child Protective Services "is what inspired him to write poetry. Since then he has become one of the nation's top advocates for social justice using the art of high-powered poetry and spoken word performances.Michael Guinn is an internationally reknown spokenword artist. He is the Founder and Slam Master for the historic Fort Worth Poetry Slam Team (which is featured every Tuesday at the Embargo located in Downtown Fort Worth). He has published over 13 books and recorded 4 volumes of poetry and spoken word. His workshops for creative writing and performance poetry have received national acclaim. Mr Guinn has done what no other performance artist has done, which is find a way to fuse the art of poetry and spokenword word in a way that makes it entertaining, educational and socially significant for various audiences. Greetings and blessings:My name is Michael Guinn A Member of the Fort Worth Slams and I'd like to take a few moments to tell you about a program that utilizes creative writing, role play and motivational speaking to effect social, edcuational and personal change in students. I'm offering an intensely provocative curriculum that includes expert assistance onbuilding higher self-esteem, self-awareness, and social relevancy through very uniqueand creative methods. Our workshop is profoundly personal approach to modeling appropriate social behavior.We beleive that by making teens more aware of how detrimental their destructive behavior can be to their future we can motivate them to want to change themselves. North Texas Youth Poetry Slam Championshipsby Michael Guinn On Wednesday, March Well it was a packed house at the Embargo for The DFW Youth Poetry Slam. Youth From miles around came to compete to be a part of the Youth Team that has a chance to go to Brave New Voices in San Francisco this summer. It was awesome. Last Night Youth Coaches Madden and Alex Sparks ran the slam and continue to do a fantastic job mentoring the kids to not only be good performers and writers but to practice values that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. The night began with meeting with all the youth, explaining the rules, giving advice and easing their nerves. After a brief open mic we open the slam by explaining the rules to the judges and audience.Cassedy Howell was the sacrificial poet who did a fantastic job setting the pace.And when all was said and done.... Tynesha is this years Youth Slam Champion scoring a perfect 60. Thanks to AMs. Candy Coleman -Dallas Slams and others for doing a great job with judging. Thanks to all our parents who supported the youth.Congrats To Tynesha Williams-Southwest High School, Anjolla Coker-Arlington, Mohandas Bathery-Poly High School, Kid Cam-Irving High, Sanger-Arlington Heights and Daniella Willis-Oakridge Academy. This is Daniella's 2nd Time on the National Team. Also competing were Cali D out of Desoto, Jesse Garcia Out of Dallas, Kathleen Cobb-Fort Worth, Brenna -TCU, Gabriela "Gabby" Singleton-South West High Shool, Johnathan Price-Arlington Heights, Amanda- Arlington Heights, and a few other amazing your poets. This event was open and remains open for ANY TEEN AGES 13-19. Its accesible for all NORTH TEXAS students and young adults to attend twice a week since September of 2010. Thousands of emails-text messages-networking at venues all other the metroplex, mantaining 3 websites, meetups, myspaces and being apart of more than 25 different list servs all across the world. Its hard work. We do it because we love this. More than i love myself, my wife, my own life. WE LOVE POETRY AND THE ART OF SPOKEN WORD. It is my wife, my religion and I live for it as much as it keeps me alive. And We know that we give everything we have to it. We are not ones to give in easily to suggestions without weighing them which includes discussing them with the people we respect and love like members of the fort worth poetry slams and fans like you. And we also respect and love those who understand all the energy and creativity that we invest enough to get there on time and leave their egoes at the door. Its becoming increasingingly difficult for us to want to continue to juggle the mutiple egoes, attitudes and arrogances of those who have the unmitigated audacitiy to beleive that we are not astute enough to take in comments-observations and discuss, adjust and make changes that benefit the global arts community. Parents would not trust us to allow their 18 year old daughters into an venue like the Embargo and then bring them back home at 11:30pm on a school night, If they did not believe and trust that we genuinely love this art with all our heart and soul and that our spirits protects as much as it gives when providing a home for all voices, musicians, artist, comedians.We are so blessed to have poets like Janean Livingston, Anthony Douglas, BEE, Princess, Big Ant and AJ Houston Just to name a few who come each week to share their heart.Folks you can come as early as 6 oclock and see that we do everything ourselves. D.J. Big Ant gets there at early around 8ish and sets up by hisself. There is a reason why we do this week in and week out for little to no recognition let alone pay.WE LOVE IT. Its the reason why organizations like APA-AKA-DST-ZPB-PHS-APO-ZTA-PKA-OMEGAS, Salvation Army, School Districts, Universities, in the US and abroad have allowed us to work with them. Because they beleive in our ability to bring to life their vision with words from my soul. They trust that we will be open to suggestions and mold accordingly. All i'm trying to say is .... FANS .... I hear you. I hear all the artists and fans. I have for years! And I am open to all critques, opinions, issues.I love everyone despite themselves. And irregardless of the hearltless hidden agendas of some of the poets and the constant shredding of the spoken word fabric I have been quilting all my life. I'm gon keep on threading hope with my heart and continue to weave my tireless energy with prayers as WE create a open forum for all spirits.Even if its in a sometimes loud, smoky, dank bar near the end of downtown.
